Abdelhak Zerouali
Born in Fez on 17 February 1952, Abdelhak Zerouali is a pioneering figure in Moroccan theatre and a leading specialist in monodrama in Morocco and the Arab world. As writer, director and sole performer, he has created more than twenty monodramas in which he assumes the writing, staging and acting.
In 1977, he founded Morocco’s first National Monodrama Festival, helping establish the form as a recognised theatrical discipline. Zerouali is also a poet and novelist and has published nine books across theatre, fiction and poetry. Moroccan newspapers have described him as “the master of monodrama” and “the adventurer of theatre”. Alongside his stage career, he has worked in film and television since the early 1980s and has received several distinctions in Morocco and across the Arab world.
