Leila Kilani
Leila Kilani is a Moroccan film director, screenwriter and producer born in Casablanca in 1970 and closely associated with Tangier. After studying Mediterranean history at the EHESS in Paris, she turned to documentary and fiction filmmaking.
Her documentary Our Forbidden Places (2008) revisited Morocco’s Years of Lead through personal memories and unresolved histories. Her first feature, On the Edge (2011), followed young women working in Tangier and was presented at the Cannes Film Festival. Across documentary and fiction, Kilani explores labour, memory, youth and the social tensions of contemporary Morocco.
