Painter Tetouan / Philadelphia

Mariam Abouzid Souali

Born in Targuist in Morocco’s Rif region in 1989, Mariam Abouzid Souali is a painter who graduated from the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan in 2012. She later studied French literature and art history in Rabat and Martil. A Fulbright scholar, she began doctoral research in 2014 and continued at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, dividing her life between Tetouan and Philadelphia. Her paintings draw on childhood memories and games as a universal language while addressing migration, inequality and the risks attached to economic progress. Young figures, celestial imagery and industrial landscapes meet in compositions that balance wonder and tension. Represented by Galerie Cécile Fakhoury, she has exhibited in Rabat, Sérignan, Paris and Dakar. In 2023, she presented Stardust, her first European solo exhibition, in Paris.
