Maryam Touzani
Born in Tangier in 1980, Maryam Touzani is a Moroccan film director, screenwriter and actor. After studying in London, she worked as a film journalist before moving into filmmaking.
Her first feature, Adam (2019), was selected at Cannes and became Morocco’s submission for the 2020 Academy Awards, making Touzani the first Moroccan woman director represented by the country in that category. Her second feature, The Blue Caftan (2022), received the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. Her cinema is recognised for intimate storytelling, careful performances and close attention to lives often kept at the margins of public discussion.
