Born in Tangier in 1970 and now based in Paris, Mounir Fatmi is a Moroccan visual and multimedia artist. His work examines technological obsolescence, consumer society, language and systems of belief through installations that may combine cables, typewriters, VHS tapes and other discarded media.
Fatmi trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. His practice has circulated widely through international exhibitions and biennials. He received the Senghor Prize at the Dakar Biennale in 2006 and a prize at the Cairo Biennale in 2010. By reusing outdated technologies, he turns failed or exhausted systems into material for critical reflection.
