Saad Tiouly
Saad Tiouly is a young Gnaoua musician from Casablanca’s medina. Raised around Moroccan popular traditions including Gnaoua, Aïssaoua and dakka marrakchia, he trained with maâlem Mohammed Oughssal. His psychedelic guembri playing and intense stage presence have earned him the nickname “the Jimi Hendrix of the guembri”.
Tiouly makes some of his own instruments and stage clothing and places experimentation at the centre of his work. He connects Gnaoua heritage with Sufi, Nubian, Arabic tarab, blues, jazz, reggae and electronic influences. He has performed with musicians including Marcus Miller and Nik West and has appeared through platforms such as WOMEX, Visa For Music and Roskilde. Releases include Rajel Chibani, Ya Wlidi and the 2024 EP Aicha with Dutch producer Prace.
