Damascus International Film Festival belongs to the history of major Arab film events. After a long interruption, Syria’s General Cinema Establishment announced in May 2026 that work was under way to bring it back, without yet publishing a confirmed calendar.
A historic Arab cinema platform
The festival previously presented Syrian, Arab and international films, competitions and professional meetings. Its planned return is described as a way to reconnect Syrian cinema with international networks and rebuild expertise in programming, distribution and film markets.
Relaunch still to be confirmed
Syria’s participation in Cannes 2026 was used to study contemporary festival management, professional exchange and market practices. No dates, selection or ticketing have yet been announced.
Relaunch status
The festival remains referenced for its historical significance and because the relaunch has been officially announced. Its status will remain “relaunch in preparation” until a verifiable programme appears. Explore other cultural festivals and institutions in Syria.
