The Tan-Tan Moussem is far more than an annual celebration. It is a space of encounter, transmission and representation for the nomadic cultures of the Sahara and north-west Africa.
A gathering rooted in nomadic life
Originally connected to the pastoral calendar, the moussem allowed communities to meet, exchange goods, conclude agreements, celebrate marriages and organise competitions involving horses and camels.
From tribal gathering to world heritage
The event took an organised form from 1963. After an interruption between 1979 and 2004, its revival reinforced its role in safeguarding a way of life affected by sedentarisation and economic change. It was inscribed in 2008 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
A stage for Hassani expressions
Encampments, equestrian displays, camel races, craft markets, songs and poetic contests connect living heritage with contemporary presentation and give visibility to skills passed between generations.
