About Archaeological Site of Volubilis

## An ancient settlement below Mount Zerhoun Volubilis, also known as Oualili, lies in a fertile plain at the foot of Mount Zerhoun, near Moulay Idriss and Meknes. The archaeological site preserves a settlement occupied across many centuries, from the pre-Roman period into Islamic times. It underwent extensive urban development during the Roman period and continued to change after imperial administration withdrew. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. ## Urban layout and monuments Across an archaeological area of approximately 42 hectares, the remains include streets, domestic quarters and public buildings. The forum, basilica, triumphal arch and temples offer evidence of civic administration, ceremonial spaces and religious life. Peristyle houses and installations for processing agricultural produce provide information about everyday activities, trade and the economic foundations of the city. ## Mosaics, inscriptions and cultural encounters Many houses retain floor mosaics combining geometric designs and figures from ancient mythology. Latin inscriptions, fragments of sculpture and other archaeological finds are sources for the city's social history and its relations with indigenous communities. Volubilis demonstrates the interaction of local traditions with political, architectural and artistic influences from the wider Mediterranean world. ## Conservation and visitor information As an open-air archaeological site, Volubilis requires continued care of exposed masonry and mosaics. Rainfall, erosion and visitor pressure are among the conservation challenges. It is separate from the urban settlement and pilgrimage area of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Consult Morocco's Ministry of Culture for ticket prices, opening times and temporary restrictions.
