Contemporary art across Taiwan’s Matsu Islands
The fourth Matsu Biennial / Matsu International Art Island is inviting artists and professional creative teams from across the world, including Morocco, to devise projects that respond to its islands and communities. The biennial runs 20 August–7 November 2027. Three suggested directions include island traditions and everyday life, former frontier and military memories, and ocean ecology and the island environment. No single compulsory curatorial theme is imposed.
Eligible project formats
The international call welcomes site-specific art installations for indoor and outdoor locations and participatory creative projects, including interdisciplinary community work, immersive experiences and public interaction. Proposals should account for the Matsu landscape, exhibition sites, local context, production feasibility and possible collaboration with island residents. Final site and technical arrangements will be confirmed after selection.
What the budget covers
The organiser indicates a creation contribution of around TWD 800,000 including tax per selected proposal. This is a project-production budget, not an unrestricted personal cash prize. Applicants should consult the full guidelines before planning how travel, artist fees, materials, shipment or accommodation would be accounted for; no separate universally funded international journey should be assumed from the headline amount.
International participation and timetable
The programme is explicitly open internationally, with no general exclusion affecting applicants from Morocco. Formal guidance is available in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Candidates are expected to engage seriously with the host location and design a feasible public outcome. Selection results are expected by the end of November 2026. Production should be completed by 10 August 2027, ahead of the exhibition.
How to submit
Applications must be sent via the official Google application form, not by email. Read the organiser’s full international call brochure, potential-site information and FAQ before preparing the proposal and budget. Queries may be sent to proposal.matsubiennial@gmail.com.
