Design an immersive world for VRChat
Realities in Transition 2 and L.E.V. Festival invite experienced VR and digital artists to create a collaborative VRChat world through Uncharted Grounds: A Journey Through Virtual Space. Three selected artists will work alongside a creative technologist on a shared interactive XR artwork. The proposal imagines virtual environments as places of movement, discovery and social encounters. The completed work is scheduled to premiere at L.E.V. Matadero in September 2027.Artist fees and production budget
Each of the three selected artists receives a €10,000 gross fee for a six-month online residency from January to June 2027, approximately €1,667 gross per month. A further collective production budget of up to €15,000 gross is available for additional working time and outside assistance, as agreed in the team work plan. The individual fee is paid in stages of €6,000, €2,000 and €2,000. As the residency is remote, the artist fee does not include travel, accommodation or subsistence allowances.
Skills and artistic approach
Applicants should have experience developing virtual-reality content. Useful creative abilities may include 3D and 2D creation, Unity, animation, sound design, narrative design, characters, interactive systems and UX. The organisers will select complementary skills and interests to build a collective artwork, rather than simply funding three unrelated personal projects. Artists working from Morocco can consider this remote format but should confirm any country-specific contracting or tax requirements with the organisers.
Schedule
Online mentoring with a VRChat expert and regular meetings with L.E.V. are planned between January and April 2027; a Test Lab in Gijón in May is part of the creative process, with final development in June and a September premiere. Applicants should verify any physical participation or travel expectations before accepting an award.
What to submit
The online application focuses on previous experience, artistic vision, the potential XR work and teamwork. Applicants upload a link to an externally accessible video (for instance on YouTube or Vimeo) introducing their practice, proposing a VR experience and explaining their possible contribution. A fully developed final project is not required.
