Medina of Agadir – Coco Polizzi

An architectural, craft and cultural complex created by Coco Polizzi in Bensergao, combining workshops, exhibitions, gardens, built heritage and an amphitheatre.

Medina of Agadir – Coco Polizzi in Agadir

A contemporary medina built through regional craftsmanship

The Medina of Agadir, often associated with its designer Coco Polizzi, is an architectural and craft complex developed in Bensergao from 1992. The project reinterprets traditional architecture from the Souss and other parts of Morocco following the loss of the old medina in the 1960 earthquake.

Construction draws on artisanal materials and techniques including stone, earth, carved wood, zellige and tadelakt. The result is not an exact reconstruction of the vanished district, but a contemporary creation inspired by several Moroccan architectural traditions.

Workshops, craftsmanship and cultural activity

The complex brings together craft workshops and shops, exhibition spaces, gardens, courtyards and an amphitheatre. Visitors can encounter different trades, discover objects made on site and walk through an environment where architecture, landscape and craftsmanship are closely connected.

The amphitheatre and indoor spaces can host events, performances, receptions and cultural activities. Programming is not necessarily daily, so the permanent heritage visit should be distinguished from occasional announced events.

Understanding the site critically

The Medina of Agadir is best understood as an architectural interpretation rather than the historic old medina itself. To explore the vanished city and the context of the earthquake, combine it with the Agadir Oufella Kasbah and the Memories of Agadir Museum.

The official website generally lists daily opening and an admission fee, although details may change. Continue with the Agadir cultural guide, upcoming events and other arts and heritage places.
