Malta Carnival transforms Valletta, Floriana and several towns across the islands into a popular stage of monumental floats, elaborate costumes, dance, music and satire. Held before Lent, it is one of the most recognisable traditions in Malta’s cultural calendar.
A popular and competitive tradition
The programme includes parades, choreographed performances, bands, installations, costumed companies and the famous maskeruni, large grotesque masks that give the carnival its distinctive visual identity. Floats and groups compete in structured categories with juries and rankings.
The 2026 edition
The main programme ran from 13 to 17 February 2026 in Valletta, Floriana and other locations. It was preceded by exhibitions and preparatory events devoted to carnival costume and practice.
