The Saint John festivities are among Monaco’s most vibrant popular traditions. For two evenings, fire, music and dance bring residents and visitors together around rituals passed down between generations.
Fire and light
The central symbol is the “batafoegu”, a bonfire lit after a blessing. Processions, songs and dances connect public squares with the Principality’s religious buildings and create a collective ceremonial journey.
Living heritage
La Palladienne de Monaco, the U Cantin d’A Roca choir, flag bearers and folklore associations preserve choreographic, musical and ceremonial repertoires. The celebration gives Monaco’s cultural identity a visible public form.
2026 edition
On 23 and 24 June 2026, the first bonfire is lit on Place du Palais. The following evening includes a procession to Place des Moulins, a service at Saint-Charles Church, traditional dances and the lighting of the second batafoegu.
