Maarat al‑Numan Museum occupies a large former Ottoman khan converted into a museum. It is especially known for its important collection of ancient mosaics from north-western Syria.
An outstanding mosaic heritage
The building’s rooms and courtyards displayed figurative and geometric pavements from archaeological sites across the region. This collection makes the museum a major reference for the history of mosaics in Syria.
Damage and restoration
The site suffered severe damage during the conflict. Security, assessment and restoration work is under way to stabilise the building and protect the collections that remain.
Access must be confirmed
The museum receives delegations and some visitors, but it should not be presented as operating normally. Local access and open areas must be checked before travelling. Continue with the National Museum of Aleppo.
