The National Museum of Aleppo is one of Syria’s major heritage institutions. Its collections document the sites and civilisations of the north of the country, from prehistoric periods to the ancient and Islamic worlds.
A museum affected by conflict
The building and collections suffered from war, attacks and years of disorganisation. Current priorities include security, inventory, preventive conservation and the rehabilitation of storage areas.
A 2026 recovery programme
With UNESCO, the University of Florence and Syrian and Italian partners, professionals and students are documenting, photographing, classifying and digitising objects. More than 350 pieces were inventoried during an initial phase.
