The National Museum of Montenegro is the country’s principal museum network for political, artistic and social history. Its buildings and collections extend across Cetinje, the former royal capital, and the Njegoš Mausoleum on Mount Lovćen.
Collections and programme
The institution includes the Historical Museum, Art Museum, Ethnographic Museum, King Nikola’s Palace, Njegoš’s birth house and archaeological and documentary collections. More than 66,000 objects are organised into 98 collections, ranging from icons and paintings to dress, weapons, archives and everyday material culture.
Cultural role
Together, these institutions interpret state formation, dynastic history, diplomacy, regional traditions and artistic development. Their programmes connect historic architecture, national memory, scholarship and public education.
