The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, known as NiMAC, occupies the former power station in Nicosia’s historic centre. Inaugurated in 1994 and associated with the Pierides Foundation, it is one of Cyprus’s leading venues for modern and contemporary art.
From industrial building to arts centre
The restoration of the Old Powerhouse and its conversion into a cultural venue received a Europa Nostra Award in 1994. Since opening, NiMAC has presented numerous exhibitions involving Cypriot and international artists, often developed with museums and art centres abroad.
Exhibitions, residencies and research
The programme includes exhibitions, performances, screenings, conferences, round tables and publications. Since 2012, the centre has also operated a residency programme for artists, researchers and cultural professionals. The complex houses the Demetrios Z. Pierides History of Art Library and an exhibition-related reading room.
Learning for younger audiences
The Educational Centre for Children, inaugurated in 2008, offers courses and workshops in contemporary art, printmaking, cinema and new media. During exhibitions, published opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00.
