Monument and cultural venue Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sarajevo City Hall – Vijećnica

Opened in 1896, destroyed in 1992 and restored before reopening in 2014, Vijećnica is a monument, a place of memory and an active cultural venue.

Sarajevo City Hall Vijećnica

Vijećnica is one of Sarajevo’s most recognisable monuments. Opened in 1896 as the city hall, the Moorish Revival building later became a library before being burned during the siege in August 1992.

Destruction and reconstruction

The loss of the building and its collections became a symbol of cultural destruction. Restoration from 1996 to 2014 led to its reopening on 9 May 2014.

A living monument

Vijećnica now hosts the City Council, ceremonies, visits, exhibitions and cultural events.
