Presented in MACAAL’s Artist Room, Under Destruction examines urban transformation and the memories created by demolition. Curated by Farah Maakel for the third Mai de la Photo, the exhibition follows a project developed through sites in Cambodia, France and Morocco, with the Marrakech presentation centred on disappearing early twentieth-century buildings around Casablanca’s old medina.
Photographic frescoes are printed directly onto concrete, cement and fibre-cement slabs. Cast-concrete stools evoke residents watching their homes disappear, while a black-and-white documentary film carries the voice of a medina inhabitant. The materials of construction and destruction become the physical surfaces of testimony.
The installation also addresses precarious labour, informal economies, marginalised occupations and the survival of local knowledge. Produced with craftspeople, it foregrounds the residents and workers whose gestures and memories persist within a changing city.
