History, programme and place in the local arts scene.

More than a performance venue

Meydene is an immersive cultural centre at the heart of M Avenue in Marrakech’s Hivernage district. Opened in December 2021, it combines a digital journey devoted to Marrakech and its region, an exhibition gallery, a private theatre, event spaces and a rooftop restaurant within a contemporary building of approximately 3,000 square metres.

The venue was conceived as the cultural core of M Avenue. Its founders did not want to reproduce a conventional museum, gallery or entertainment park. Instead, Meydene uses residents’ voices, everyday objects, images, sound, digital scenography and live performance to offer a contemporary interpretation of Marrakchi identity.

This hybrid model makes it relevant to residents, families, tourists, schools, companies and audiences attending a specific ticketed show.

Opened at the heart of M Avenue

M Avenue began taking shape in the early 2010s as a landscaped urban destination linking the Palais des Congrès area with the Menara Gardens. Meydene was developed as its cultural “lung”. After several years of design—including five years devoted to the immersive journey—the centre was inaugurated over 3, 4 and 5 December 2021.

The building is a restrained contemporary volume in which light, images, multimedia technology and stage production take precedence. Meydene reports a total area of approximately 3,000 square metres.

The name evokes the idea of a meydan, a public square where people meet, listen and watch collective life unfold. This meeting-place ambition is reflected in the coexistence of the immersive route, theatre, exhibitions and public events.

The immersive journey: interpreting Marrakech through technology

Meydene’s permanent core is its “2.0 Immersive Journey”. It is not an exhaustive historical account of Marrakech. It communicates atmospheres, gestures, voices and visual memories through five staged sequences.

1. I Am Marrakech

Digital totems present Marrakchis and other residents speaking about everyday life, work, habits and their relationship with the city. The experience therefore begins with people rather than a list of monuments.

2. Landscapes and Alleys

The second sequence moves through landscapes, colours, patterns and streets associated with Marrakech and its region. Three-dimensional projections turn these images into a changing visual environment.

3. The Hall of Wonders

A large-scale audiovisual environment carries visitors from the city toward the Atlas Mountains and the landscapes of the Marrakech-Safi region. Meydene presents it as a rihla, or sensory journey.

4. The Island of Stories

This section contains approximately 300 objects connected with everyday Marrakchi life. Tools, domestic forms and familiar artefacts bring the experience from the spectacular back to intimate histories, use and transmission.

5. The Souvenir

The final stage offers a photographic trace of the visit. It reinforces the idea of a personal experience rather than a collection viewed from a distance.

The journey can be useful for families and first-time visitors, but it should be understood as a staged interpretation. It does not replace walking through the medina, visiting museums or meeting craftspeople and residents directly.

A 402-seat private theatre

Meydene’s theatre, sometimes branded as “La Scène”, officially seats 402 people. Opening reports commonly rounded this to 400 seats. It was presented as one of Marrakech’s first contemporary private theatres of this scale.

The programme can include Moroccan and French-language theatre, stand-up comedy, Moroccan and international concerts, tarab, aita, Gnawa and spiritual music, dance, flamenco, visual shows, children’s productions, conferences and professional events.

Because formats vary, audiences should always check the language, assigned seating, age guidance, price and running time for the individual production.

Maysan: a production created for Marrakech

At its opening, Meydene introduced Maysan, an in-house production combining music, poetry, dance, acrobatics, choreography and interactive visual effects. The story follows a star through Marrakech’s alleys, the desert and the Atlas Mountains.

The show was designed to feature Moroccan performers and make full use of the theatre’s technical capabilities. Its dates have changed by season, so visitors should not assume that it runs every evening.

A regular programme of live performance

Since 2022, Meydene has hosted Moroccan and international comedians, theatre productions, intimate concerts, flamenco, family shows and evenings devoted to musical heritage.

Recurring strands include stand-up in Arabic and French, tarab, Gnawa, rai, Sufi repertoires and tributes to major Arabic singers. Different seasons have featured artists such as Ahmed Soultan, Fehd Benchemsi & The Lallas, Garou, Nordine Ganso, Rachid Rafik and Hanane Fadili.

In 2025, Meydene also hosted Marrakech’s first Candlelight concerts, confirming the theatre’s ability to adapt to highly staged musical formats.

The official ticketing platform was still offering the immersive journey and theatre events in 2026. Browse current cultural events in Marrakech before planning a visit.

The Marrakech International Film Festival

The theatre gained particular visibility in 2024 when it hosted the Marrakech International Film Festival’s public “Conversations”. Guests included Tim Burton, David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuarón, Ava DuVernay, Sean Penn, François Ozon, Todd Haynes and Abderrahmane Sissako.

This partnership demonstrated that Meydene can operate as a venue for dialogue and transmission, not only entertainment. Its proximity to the Palais des Festivals & des Congrès strengthens its role in Hivernage’s events district.

A gallery for contemporary art

Meydene’s lobby and gallery host temporary exhibitions alongside the permanent immersive route. The programme has included Moroccan, African and international artists working in painting, photography, sculpture, graffiti and contemporary art.

The venue has referenced presentations connected with Brusk, Senegalese photographer Malick Welli, backstage photography from the Marrakech du Rire festival and the 1-54 contemporary African art fair.

For a wider view of the city’s art scene, continue with MACAAL, the Montresso* Art Foundation and the French Institute of Marrakech.

Le Douar rooftop restaurant

The rooftop houses Le Douar, a restaurant focused on Moroccan rural, domestic and less commonly promoted recipes. It is designed as a culinary extension of the cultural experience.

The restaurant follows its own opening hours and reservation rules. Dining is not required to attend a performance or visit the immersive journey, and the cultural visit does not automatically include a meal.

Private and professional events

Meydene also hosts conferences, launches, award ceremonies, filming, fashion events, corporate gatherings and team-building activities. This private-events activity is part of its operating model but should not be confused with the public cultural programme.

Depending on the format, groups can combine the immersive route, theatre, gallery, catering and reception spaces.

Planning a visit

The official website currently lists general opening hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. These hours apply broadly to the centre and immersive experience; performances, exhibitions and the restaurant may follow different schedules.

For a theatre event, confirm the door time, performance language, seating category, possible age restriction, cancellation policy and official ticket seller.

Meydene is located inside M Avenue near the Palais des Congrès, Four Seasons Resort and Menara Gardens. It can be reached by taxi or car and benefits from M Avenue’s parking facilities.
