Dar Niaba – Museum of Travelling Artists

## A landmark of Tangier’s diplomatic history **Dar Niaba – Museum of Travelling Artists** stands at 41 Rue Siaghine in Tangier’s old medina. The building has an exceptional diplomatic history: it was offered to France in 1816 to house its consular offices and later became closely associated with Moroccan foreign affairs. In 1851, Tangier became the seat of the **Naib of the Sultan**, the representative responsible for relations with foreign powers, making Dar Niaba a key witness to the city’s international role. ## Diplomacy and travelling artists The permanent display is divided into two broad themes. One explores the history of Moroccan diplomacy and Tangier as a city of negotiation and exchange. The other presents artists who travelled through Morocco and represented its landscapes, cities and people, including figures associated with Eugène Delacroix, Diego Marin Lopez, Paul Neri, Edy Legrand and Antonio Fuentes. A donation of around **350 works and objects** assembled by Didier Sentis de Montoussy significantly enriched the collection. ## Temporary exhibitions In 2026, Dar Niaba hosted an exhibition devoted to **Mariano Fortuny**, bringing together around fifty works by the major nineteenth-century Spanish artist. The museum also appears in some multi-venue cultural programmes in Tangier.
