A cultural space integrated into a historic monument
Taourirt Kasbah – Exhibition Spaces refers to the multipurpose rooms, exhibition areas and interpretation spaces developed within part of Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate. It should not be understood as a fully independent gallery with a guaranteed permanent programme. Rather, it represents a cultural use of the monument, closely connected to heritage conservation and public interpretation.
The Kasbah stands on Avenue Mohammed V, opposite the Cinema Museum, within the historic Taourirt district. Its ochre earthen walls, corner towers and interlocking volumes form one of Ouarzazate’s most recognisable urban landmarks.
A tighermt at the crossroads of southern routes
The complex is commonly traced to the seventeenth century, although it was substantially enlarged and reshaped during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries under Glaoui authority. Its position controlled routes linking the Drâa and Dadès valleys with Atlas crossings and older trans-Saharan trade networks.
The Kasbah combined residential, defensive, administrative and economic functions. It should also be read together with the neighbouring ksar, whose history reflects the Amazigh, Arab and Jewish communities of Ouarzazate.
A frequent misconception should be corrected: Taourirt Kasbah is not inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Within Ouarzazate Province, that status belongs to the Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou, listed in 1987. Taourirt is, however, recognised as Moroccan cultural heritage.
Earthen architecture and decorated interiors
The site’s importance extends beyond its monumental exterior. The Kasbah combines rammed earth, adobe, timber, vegetal fibres and earthen renders. Its spaces include courtyards, family rooms, passages, terraces, towers and reception halls.
Some interiors preserve decoration far richer than the restrained façades suggest: painted or carved ceilings, geometric patterns, zellij, stucco and wall paintings. These elements reveal the meeting of local building techniques, decorative craftsmanship and the ceremonial functions of political power.
CERKAS and the transmission of conservation skills
The Centre for the Conservation and Rehabilitation of the Architectural Heritage of the Atlas and Sub-Atlas Regions — CERKAS has been based in the south-eastern part of the Kasbah since the late 1980s. This public institution works to protect kasbahs, ksour, communal granaries and other historic earthen structures across southern Morocco.
Spaces associated with CERKAS have hosted exhibitions on southern Moroccan architecture, traditional doors and windows, photographic documentation, heritage inventories and the work of painters and sculptors. Workshops in painting and pottery, lectures and events exploring local cultures have also taken place there.
This connection between research, conservation, exhibitions and training gives the site a role wider than that of a visitor attraction. The Kasbah also serves as a place for transmitting earthen building knowledge and restoration methods.
A landmark conservation project
From 2011 to 2016, the Getty Conservation Institute and CERKAS developed a Conservation and Rehabilitation Plan for Taourirt Kasbah. The programme combined architectural documentation, historical research, structural assessment, wall-painting conservation, emergency stabilisation and planning for future uses.
Particular attention was given to local materials, traditional techniques and the training of craftspeople and heritage professionals. The project has become an important reference for conserving earthen architecture in pre-Saharan regions.
The earthquake of 8 September 2023 caused further damage to heritage sites in southern Morocco, including Taourirt. Studies and restoration work followed, while additional tourism and cultural improvements around the Kasbah were launched in 2026. Access to particular areas may therefore change while work is underway.
Exhibitions, Ahwach and contemporary uses
The Kasbah’s cultural life extends beyond heritage visits. Its surroundings host visual-art exhibitions, craft activities and cultural events. The Taourirt esplanade is also an emblematic setting for the National Ahwach Arts Festival, bringing together performers, artists and researchers around this choreographic and musical heritage.
Contemporary creation can enter into a powerful dialogue with the historic complex when it respects the architecture, local communities and the monument’s physical fragility. Here, the quality of interpretation and programming matters more than the simple label of “art gallery”.
Planning a visit
Taourirt Kasbah is located on Avenue Mohammed V, close to central Ouarzazate. Access to exhibition rooms or interior sections may depend on restoration work, events and site-management decisions. Confirm conditions locally before planning a visit specifically around a temporary exhibition.
