Tangier American Legation – TALIM Museum and Cultural Center

## About the institution and its status The **Tangier American Legation**, managed by the **Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM)**, is a **museum, research library and cultural centre** at **8 Rue d'Amérique in Tangier's medina**. Its extraordinary history dates to **1821**, when Sultan Moulay Suliman presented the property to the United States. It represents a foundational chapter of Moroccan–American relations and is the only designated **U.S. National Historic Landmark outside U.S. territory**. ## Facilities, arts and cultural resources Visitors explore paintings, maps, diplomatic archives, artefacts and historic rooms documenting Tangier's international life. TALIM also organises **film screenings, writers' talks, lectures, exhibitions and concerts**, some free and separate from museum admission. Its **September 2026** programme announced a screening of **The Grapes of Wrath on 7 September** and an author event with **Joel Krauss on 17 September**. June programmes also examined Tangier's jazz heritage and the history of Moroccan–U.S. ties. ## Documented programmes and 2026 access The **TALIM Research Library** holds **over 10,000 books and archival resources** about Morocco and the Mediterranean. Since **2023**, structural concerns have required the library to operate **in a separate annex**, with research access **by appointment**. **Museum opening times: Monday–Friday 10 am–5 pm; Saturday–Sunday 10 am–3 pm**. Advertised admission is **MAD 20 for residents and MAD 50 for non-residents**.
