An ethnographic museum inside the ksar of Tissergate

The Museum of Arts and Traditions of the Drâa Valley is located within Tissergate, a fortified village north of Zagora and one of the region’s best-preserved ksour. Its setting is essential to the visit. Earthen walls, shaded passages and communal spatial organisation provide an architectural context for understanding how communities adapted to oasis and pre-Saharan environments.

Rather than presenting heritage as a decorative style, the museum examines the practical systems behind everyday life: agriculture, water, domestic work, trade, clothing, celebration and the use of locally available materials.

Objects, crafts and cultural exchange

The collections include agricultural tools, household utensils, jewellery, garments, musical instruments and objects made from wood, leather, metal and plant fibres. Displays may also address earthen construction and the organisation of life within ksour. Together, these materials show how craft practices developed in relation to climate, mobility and the resources of the palm groves.

The Drâa Valley has been shaped by Amazigh, Arab, Saharan, Jewish and sub-Saharan histories. Caravan routes connected local settlements to wider commercial and cultural networks. The museum’s value lies in bringing these overlapping influences into a single narrative without reducing the region to folklore.

Visiting a living heritage site

Tissergate remains inhabited. Visitors should distinguish museum areas from private homes and respect the pace of local life. Walking through the ksar also provides a direct lesson in bioclimatic architecture: narrow lanes, thick walls, covered passages and shared structures regulate light and temperature.
