Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts, Fez

A historic funduq dedicated to the arts of wood

The Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts occupies the eighteenth-century Funduq Nejjarine in the heart of the Fez medina. Restored by the Karim Lamrani Foundation and opened as a museum in 1998, the building introduces the historic role of a funduq: accommodating merchants, storing goods and organising trade around a central courtyard.

The restoration highlights the stacked galleries, carved timber, sculpted plaster, zellij and carefully balanced proportions. The visit therefore connects the architectural history of the building with the collections displayed inside it.

Tools, furniture and technical knowledge

The galleries present woodworking tools, chests, doors, architectural elements, instruments, domestic objects and pieces associated with different wood trades. The displays explain how timber species were selected, prepared, joined, carved, painted or adapted to particular uses.

Beyond exceptional objects, the museum documents systems of knowledge: transmission from master to apprentice, the organisation of craft guilds, the relationship between workshop and building site, and the adaptation of forms to religious, domestic or commercial settings. This provides a practical context for the ceilings, doors and screens encountered elsewhere in Fez.

A landmark within the medina

The roof terrace gives a view over the medina and reveals how the funduq fits into the dense urban fabric. The Nejjarine Fountain, craft souks and several heritage routes are nearby. Allow time to reach the museum on foot and confirm the entrance, as the surrounding lanes can be difficult to navigate on a first visit.
