At the heart of Rabat, Chellah became a stage for memory through Nostalgia, The Soul of Time, an immersive production combining visual storytelling, sound, light and live performance.
Held until 5 July 2026 under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the event invited audiences to travel through the civilisations that shaped one of Rabat’s most emblematic heritage sites.
Chellah finds its voice
Chellah holds a distinctive place in Morocco’s cultural imagination. The archaeological site and Marinid necropolis carry traces of several historical periods.
The production used this depth to create an experience in which visitors encountered not only a monument but a narrative. Lighting revealed architectural volumes, music guided transitions and performers redrew the space through movement.
Chellah was no longer treated as a fixed backdrop. It became an active place of transmission, emotion and collective memory.
History, light and live performance
Director Amine Nassour approached the production as a way to animate Morocco’s archaeological heritage through drama.
Young graduates of the Higher Institute of Dramatic Art and Cultural Animation (ISADAC) performed alongside established Moroccan artists, linking heritage interpretation with training and professional development.
Their participation gave the project an additional dimension: history was not presented as a distant inheritance, but as material that a new generation could interpret and carry forward.
Heritage as a contemporary experience
The production responded to audiences’ growing interest in immersive cultural forms. Instead of relying on a conventional site visit, it created a direct relationship among place, history and spectator.
For Rabat—a city of museums, festivals, cultural institutions and historic sites—such projects show how heritage can contribute to contemporary cultural life.
They also raise important questions: how can artistic interpretation respect archaeological sites, remain historically responsible and create access beyond a temporary performance?
Rediscovering Rabat
By bringing live arts into Chellah, Nostalgia, The Soul of Time demonstrated that Moroccan heritage can be narrated through new forms without losing its depth.
The production invited audiences to see historic sites not as silent remains, but as places capable of generating meaning, beauty and connection.
Chellah thus reaffirmed its place among Rabat’s major cultural landmarks: at once an archaeological site, a space for creation and a meeting point between artists, audiences and historical narratives.
