Create visible art at a museum in the Adirondack Mountains
Adirondack Experience — The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX) will select four visual artists for consecutive one-month residencies in June, July, August and September 2027 in the rural Adirondack region of New York State. Artists develop their practice in response to the museum's natural setting, objects, stories and community. An essential aspect is creating in public spaces and engaging museum visitors, rather than only producing work privately.Stipend, travel and accommodation
Each artist receives a USD 5,000 stipend, USD 500 travel allowance and free on-site housing for the month. A separate USD 250 materials allowance supports visitor Art Lab sessions; materials for the resident's own artwork are generally self-funded. The site has no convenient public transportation, although a weekly shuttle to nearby shops is offered. The housing is accessed by stairs, so candidates with mobility needs should discuss accessibility directly.
International eligibility and visa warning
ADKX accepts applicants regardless of nationality, including Moroccans, working in a creative discipline directly linked to the visual arts such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, craft, textiles or book arts. The portfolio must show at least five pieces previously publicly exhibited or sold to private collectors; simple online marketplace sales do not satisfy the condition. Non-US residents must arrange and pay for their own visa. The museum cannot act as a visa sponsor, although it can provide a residency confirmation letter.
Public engagement is compulsory
Artists work in the museum's publicly accessible areas for at least three days a week and six hours a day, usually 10am–4pm. They also lead short creative opportunities in the Art Lab that visitors can complete during their stay. Digital and performance artists must state how the actual artistic process will be experienced by visitors; a final show or exhibition alone is not a substitute.
What to submit and where
Send the completed application or a link to the package by email to cbraunstein@theadkx.org. The organiser asks for a one-page statement explaining the artist's connection to the Adirondacks, an artist statement and bio, 8–15 portfolio pieces, and a proposed visitor-focused Art Lab activity. An online interview may follow in early February 2027, with notifications by 20 February.
