Six months of artistic research into energy transitions
Schaufler Lab at TU Dresden, a collaboration between Dresden University of Technology and The Schaufler Foundation, invites an internationally active artist or artist collective to undertake a six-month residency from April 2027. Its theme, “Energy Cultures in Transition,” explores how technologies and forms of energy shape cultural identities, social values, ecological relationships, power structures and future imaginaries. The international call includes artists based in Morocco.Funding and facilities: distinguish the components
The selected artist receives a net stipend of €3,000 a month for six months — €18,000 total — plus a studio on the TU Dresden campus and production support of up to €10,000 for artistic creation and exhibition. A solo exhibition at the University Gallery in autumn 2027 and an artist publication are planned. Residents gain access to university laboratories and researchers and receive help finding accommodation, not guaranteed free housing. The official offer does not clearly promise to cover international travel or visa fees, which applicants should budget for or confirm directly.
This call is subject to approval of the 2027–2030 funding phase. The award is therefore conditional until selection and financial approval.
Who is eligible?
The programme targets experienced internationally active artists and collectives, particularly those working in media art, conceptual art, performance, installation and transdisciplinary practices. Applicants should demonstrate a coherent artistic approach and recognised projects or exhibitions. They must be very comfortable communicating in English or German and able to attend on-site activities in Dresden regularly, collaborating with scientists and humanities scholars.
Artistic expectations
This is a research collaboration, not a conventional isolated studio stay. The resident joins discussions, workshops, lectures and presentations, building a project around energy, materials, extraction, transition, cultural imaginaries or technological and ecological change. Proposals should identify potentially relevant research departments and a plausible plan; the organisers explicitly request that applicants do not contact potential university collaborators before selection.
