Lmoutchou / Mobydick, whose real name is Younes Taleb, is a Moroccan rapper, writer, performer and producer based in Rabat. Active in Moroccan hip-hop since the early 2000s, he belongs to a generation that helped establish rap as a lasting space for writing, social observation and linguistic experimentation in Morocco. His career is marked by a shift from French to a highly distinctive use of Darija, a taste for storytelling and irony, and a sustained commitment to independent production through Adghal Records.
From French-language rap to a distinct Darija voice
Before establishing himself as a solo artist, Taleb performed in French with the group La Sekte. The Institut du monde arabe traces this early visibility to the beginning of the 2000s and cites tracks such as “Ma clique et moi”, “Viens voir” and “Coup d’éclat”. “Toc Toc”, performed in Darija, became one of the pivotal tracks in his development. The language shift was more than stylistic: it helped shape a writing voice rooted in Moroccan speech, references and everyday social codes.
2006: L’Boulevard as a turning point
In 2006, Mobydick won the rap/hip-hop Tremplin at L’Boulevard. The festival later described him as an artist whose early French-language rap evolved into one of Moroccan hip-hop’s most recognisable Darija writing styles, moving between humour and serious subjects, egotrip and storytelling. The award marked the beginning of a professional career built through live shows, mixtapes, collaborations and self-produced projects.
“Lmoutchou Family”: a concept album about an ordinary Moroccan household
Released in December 2010 by Adghal Records, Lmoutchou Family contains fourteen tracks. In an interview with Aujourd’hui le Maroc, Taleb explained that the album was built around the character of Lmoutchou, first developed through the “Toc Toc” universe. Each song introduces a character or situation linked to a modest Moroccan family, turning dreams of social mobility, domestic tensions, humour and economic pressure into narrative material. “Ana Machaferch”, “Super Moutchou”, “Ma clique et moi – Tome II” and “Toc Toc, Pt. 3” are among the tracks that give the album its conceptual coherence.
Adghal Records and independence as a working method
Mobydick’s story is also that of a producer. TelQuel documented the creation of Adghal Records from 2008 as a structure designed to record and produce his singles, mixtapes, albums and videos. By 2012, he was opening the studio more widely to emerging rappers. This technical and entrepreneurial dimension became central to his career, allowing him to maintain control over recording, production and artistic direction outside conventional industry circuits.
Satire, storytelling and hip-hop culture
Lmoutchou’s writing thrives on contrast: humour alongside social criticism, commentary on the Moroccan rap scene, personal storytelling and political observation. L’Boulevard highlights his ability to move between second-degree humour and serious subjects, egotrip and narrative writing, raw mixtapes and more experimental projects. His influence is also visible in a younger generation: Khtek names Lmoutchou among the artists who shaped her relationship with hip-hop.
Mixtapes, EPs and collaborative projects
After Lmoutchou Family, his catalogue expanded through Dars Khass Ba3da L’Album in 2012, Fast Food in 2014 and Lmadda Lkham in 2016. The latter is a twenty-one-track mixtape that addresses the Moroccan rap scene, cultural policy and a range of social and political issues. In 2021, Pack de 6 condensed six tracks from a larger body of material into a focused EP.
PARIS-RABAT and recent releases
In May 2023, Mobydick joined forces with Leeroy, formerly of Saïan Supa Crew, for PARIS-RABAT. Released by Volume Sonore, the eight-track project builds a dialogue between Rabat and Paris while moving across rap, reggae, dancehall, French and Darija. His catalogue has continued with “Psychodrama” in 2024, followed by “Alcootest”, “Chopin (Remix)”, “Dear Mama” and “Zanga Zanga” in 2025. Streaming platforms list “Phonographic Tmjneena” among his 2026 releases.
A veteran who remains part of the present tense
Lmoutchou occupies a distinctive position in Moroccan rap history: his catalogue spans several aesthetic cycles without being confined to an “old-school” label. He remains connected to Rabat, to the generations shaped by L’Boulevard and to a conception of hip-hop in which writing, production and independence matter as much as visibility.
