The Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre — CIFET — is a historic meeting point for new theatrical languages. It gives Egyptian and Arab audiences access to stage practices from different countries while making regional work visible internationally.
Experimenting with the stage
The festival presents productions exploring direction, acting, scenography, lighting, the body, image and performance. Works are selected by specialist committees and brought together in an international competition.
Research and transmission
CIFET also organises workshops, seminars, artist encounters, tributes and specialist publications. These activities make it a space for circulating methods, ideas and theatrical references.
2026 edition
The 33rd edition is scheduled for 1–8 September 2026, with Egyptian, Arab and international companies. Selected productions, venues and access details are published by the organisers closer to the festival.
Why it matters
- A long history beginning in 1988.
- A clear focus on experimentation and contemporary forms.
- A programme linking performance, research and training.
- An obvious editorial dialogue with D-CAF.
