Founded in 2001, the Marrakech International Film Festival brings together broad public audiences, filmmakers at the beginning of their careers and established figures of world cinema. Its programme connects discovery, transmission, Moroccan cinema and professional exchange across Africa, the Arab world and the international film community.
A festival rooted in Morocco’s film history
The festival was created at the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to support cinematic art and the film industry in Morocco. In July 2002, the Marrakech International Film Festival Foundation gave this ambition a permanent institutional framework. The non-profit public-interest foundation, chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, organises the annual festival and supports the creation, promotion and circulation of cinema.
Discovering films and meeting the people who make them
The international competition gives particular attention to first and second feature films. Gala screenings, special presentations, the 11th Continent section, the Moroccan Cinema Panorama and programmes for younger audiences provide different ways into contemporary filmmaking. Tributes and public Conversations also give audiences direct access to filmmakers, performers and professionals discussing their careers, artistic choices and working methods.
A professional platform for African and Arab cinema
Launched in 2018, the Atlas Workshops support projects and films from Africa and the Middle East, with particular attention to a new generation of Moroccan, Arab and African filmmakers. The programme connects writers, directors, producers, experts and international partners to strengthen development, coproduction and the circulation of films.
The festival across Marrakech
The festival takes place in several city venues, including the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, Le Colisée Cinema and, depending on the edition, public spaces. This presence across the city extends the festival beyond its ceremonies and places cinema within the wider cultural life of Marrakech.
2026 edition
The 23rd edition is scheduled for 20–28 November 2026. The official selection, guests, screening times and access conditions will be announced by the organisers. Follow the available information on the 2026 edition page.
