A historic cinema in the heart of Guéliz

Le Colisée Cinema is one of Marrakech’s landmark film theatres. Opened in 1953 in the Guéliz district, it was arranged by French architect Georges Peynet, whose work is also associated with major Paris cinemas including the Max Linder, Vendôme-Opéra and Paramount-Élysées.

Still operating today, Le Colisée retains the identity of a large city-centre cinema: a recognisable entrance on Boulevard Mohamed Zerktouni, a substantial two-level auditorium and a programme combining popular releases, Moroccan films and international cinema.

A 750-seat auditorium with orchestra and balcony levels

The official website lists a capacity of 750 seats, divided between the ground-floor orchestra and the upper balcony. The auditorium also has an opening roof, an unusually distinctive architectural feature.

Renovated several times, the cinema is now equipped with digital projection and sound. These upgrades allow it to screen contemporary releases while retaining the layout and atmosphere of a historic film theatre.

Moroccan films, international releases and younger audiences

The programme changes weekly and may include Moroccan and Arabic-language films, international releases, French-language screenings, original versions with French subtitles, animation and family sessions, as well as special festival programmes.

Le Colisée presents popular and auteur cinema within the same venue rather than treating them as separate audiences.

An important venue in Marrakech film culture

Le Colisée has hosted the Marrakech International Film Festival since the festival’s creation. It also welcomes the European Film Weeks and has been used for other cultural events, including Marrakech du Rire.

This regular activity makes it a living cinema rather than a preserved monument. It operates throughout the year while also serving as a public venue for Moroccan cinema, international films and major cinematic events in Marrakech.

As of July 2026, the official website displays tickets at 40 MAD for orchestra seating, reduced to 30 MAD on Mondays, and 50 MAD for balcony seating. Prices and screening times may change, so confirm them online on the day of your visit.
