The Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation reopened on 18 March 2025 after five years of renovation. Located within the foundation’s cultural centre in Nicosia, it presents one of Cyprus’s most important collections of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art.
From the fourth to the eighteenth century
The renewed display follows a chronological route from the early Christian centuries to the eighteenth century. Thematic sections also highlight major iconographic subjects and recognised painters, including signed works held in the collection.
Icons, mosaics and repatriated works
The museum brings together icons, fresco fragments, mosaics, liturgical objects and manuscripts. Particular attention is given to works displaced or looted after 1974 and later returned, opening a wider discussion on the protection and restitution of Cypriot religious heritage.
A renewed museum experience
Detailed labels are supported by digital media and interactive screens. Visitors can explore material on churches within Nicosia’s walls and learn more about techniques, styles and the historical settings in which the works were created.
Plan your visit
The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30–17:00. The published individual ticket is €7, with a reduced rate for groups of more than ten people. Opening arrangements should be confirmed before visiting.
