About this event
The French Institute gallery in Rabat hosts Sacred Innovation by Youssef Elmekaoui from 15 October to 14 November 2026. The exhibition explores the symbolism of everyday materials and how memory, faith and identity shape artistic practice.
Since 2011 the artist has worked with sugar, salt, wax, wool and alum stone, materials linked to childhood memories of places of worship. Their apparent whiteness is anything but empty: it opens a dialogue between ritual, perception and collective remembrance. Repetition and fragmentation turn simple forms into an exploration of change and belonging.
Elmekaoui trained at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan and teaches applied arts in Rabat. His exhibition invites visitors to discover a distinctive perspective on contemporary Moroccan art.
Practical details: free entry at the French Institute, 1 rue Abou Inane. Tuesday–Friday 10am–6pm, Saturday 10am–5pm. Explore more Rabat cultural events on Culturama.
