A specialist arts school within Al Hoceima’s new cultural district

Al Hoceima Music Conservatory is a public facility designed for music education and choreographic training. It stands on Avenue Tarik Ibn Ziyad, close to the municipal stadium and beside the Grand Theatre of Al Hoceima. Both buildings were developed through the Al Hoceima–Manarat Al Moutawassit programme, which included a major expansion of cultural and public infrastructure across the province.

The conservatory is a separate institution from the Maison de la Culture Prince Moulay El Hassan. Its purpose is not simply to host occasional events, but to provide the rooms, acoustics and technical resources required for sustained artistic education. Its position next to the theatre also creates a potential bridge between training, rehearsal and public performance.

Music rooms, recording facilities and choreography training

Published project documentation describes four rooms for solfège and general musicianship, eight rooms for instrumental tuition, a recording studio, a choreography room and a music library. The complex also includes rehearsal areas, administrative offices and specialist acoustic and sound equipment.

The technical team responsible for the specialist installations lists studio equipment, room acoustics, sound systems and the treatment of instrument and solfège classrooms among its work. These features indicate that the building was conceived as a genuine teaching conservatory rather than a generic multipurpose hall.

Part of a wider investment in culture across the Rif

Construction of the theatre and conservatory began through public contracts from 2017 onwards, under the supervision of the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North. The buildings and their equipment were reported as nearing completion between 2020 and 2022. Public presentations described the conservatory as a place where children and young people from Al Hoceima could receive structured training in music and choreographic arts.

The project has particular relevance in the Rif, where local music, theatre and cultural associations have a strong presence but access to specialist arts education is less extensive than in Morocco’s largest cities. A functioning conservatory could connect introductory learning with ensemble practice, recording, artistic creation and professional development.

Check registration and opening arrangements before visiting

Although the building has been described as completed and ready to receive students, recent public information does not clearly confirm regular classes, a current registration campaign or a public administrative timetable. Al Hoceima is also not clearly listed on the Ministry’s online directory of operational conservatories.

Prospective students and families should therefore confirm whether the conservatory is currently open, which instruments and dance disciplines are available, admission ages, fees and lesson schedules before travelling.
