Morocco’s national institution for documentary heritage

The National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco, commonly known by its French acronym BNRM, is the country’s central institution for collecting, preserving, studying and sharing the national documentary heritage. Based in Rabat’s Agdal district, it operates simultaneously as a research library, a public knowledge institution, a national bibliographic agency and a cultural venue.

Its purpose reaches far beyond lending books. The library safeguards the written, visual, cartographic, sound and digital record of Morocco while creating practical access for students, academics, researchers, publishing professionals and general readers. Reading rooms, catalogues, specialised collections, digital resources, exhibitions and conferences connect long-term preservation with contemporary public use.

From the General Library to a modern national library

The institution traces its history to the General Library established in 1924, whose early holdings included collections from the Institute of Advanced Moroccan Studies. In 1926 it became the General Library and Archives, with a mandate to gather, preserve and communicate documentation relating to Morocco.

Legislation adopted in 2003 established its current public status and official name. The contemporary Agdal building, opened in 2008, gave this national mission a new architectural setting: a civic space designed for heritage conservation, research, digital services and public cultural life.

Legal deposit, national bibliography, ISBN and ISSN

One of the BNRM’s defining responsibilities is the management of legal deposit. Publications produced in Morocco are collected so that the country retains a durable record of its intellectual and editorial output, including books, periodicals, audiovisual works and digital materials.

The library produces the Moroccan national bibliography and administers the country’s ISBN identifiers for books and ISSN identifiers for serial publications. This makes it a key institution not only for readers but also for authors, publishers, printers, librarians, documentalists and researchers working across Morocco’s book and knowledge sectors.

Its mandate also includes bibliographic standards, cooperation between libraries, the preservation of manuscript heritage, professional training and the development of catalogues and research tools that connect users with Moroccan and international collections.

Collections, research facilities and digital access

The collections cover Moroccan history, literature, religion, geography, the humanities, social sciences, arts and wider research on the Maghreb and the western Islamic world. Holdings include hundreds of thousands of books, more than 60,000 manuscripts, thousands of periodical titles, maps, plans, photographs, prints, musical scores, sound recordings and audiovisual documents.

The Agdal complex includes reading and consultation areas, computer stations, microfilm equipment, training and conference rooms, an auditorium seating roughly 300 people and a dedicated exhibition space. Online catalogues, remote documentation services, electronic resources, audiobooks and the Moroccan Digital Library extend access beyond the physical building.

A cultural and intellectual venue in Rabat

The BNRM also contributes directly to Rabat’s cultural life through documentary exhibitions, lectures, book presentations, academic meetings and public conversations. These programmes bring collections into dialogue with current scholarship, publishing and contemporary cultural questions.

Its Agdal location places it within a strong network of institutions. The National Library is located on Avenue Ibn Khaldoun in Agdal, close to the Bibliothèque Nationale tram stop.
