A Saadian fortress above the medina

The Borj Nord Arms Museum occupies a sixteenth-century fortress built under the Saadian dynasty on the heights overlooking Fez el-Bali. Its architecture originally served military and territorial control. The monument became a museum in 1963, allowing a major arms collection to be displayed without erasing the defensive character of the site.

The borj commands a broad view over the medina, surrounding hills and historic approaches. This panorama helps visitors understand the relationship between topography, urban protection and the positioning of military structures.

Moroccan arms in an international context

The collections cover different periods and regions through edged weapons, sabres, daggers, lances, rifles, pistols, armour and artillery. Moroccan objects are placed within a wider history of technical and diplomatic exchange. Decoration, inscriptions, materials and manufacturing systems show that an arm could be a military instrument, a prestige object and the product of specialist craftsmanship.

One of the best-known pieces is a very large cannon associated with the Battle of the Three Kings in 1578. The displays also invite comparison with European, African, Middle Eastern and Asian production rather than presenting Moroccan military history in isolation.

A museum of technical history

The visit addresses political history alongside metalworking, mechanics, ballistics and decorative art. It complements the collections of the Al Batha Museum and the craft history explored at the Nejjarine Museum.

The site lies outside the densest medina routes. Plan transport, allow for the climb and take account of sun exposure around the terrace and approaches.
