History, programme and place in the local arts scene.

A cultural campus on Route de Targa

The French Institute of Marrakech is one of the city’s main platforms for cultural, linguistic and academic cooperation. Its Route de Targa campus combines a performance hall, cinema and exhibition facilities, adult and children’s media-library spaces, a Micro-Folie digital museum, a FabLab, virtual-reality equipment, French-language teaching and a Campus France office.

As part of the French Institute of Morocco network, the Marrakech branch works with Moroccan and international artists, schools, universities, festivals and cultural organisations. Its programme brings together contemporary creation, cinema, literature, public debate, digital culture and educational activity.

Leïla Alaoui Hall and performance spaces

Leïla Alaoui Hall is the campus’s principal indoor venue. Named after the French-Moroccan photographer, it hosts theatre, dance, contemporary circus, concerts, screenings, residencies and public discussions. The site also includes an open-air theatre, gardens and outdoor areas used for workshops, demonstrations and festivals.

Programming can move between seated performances, participatory formats and work developed in residence. Recent seasons have included theatre, hip-hop, slam, contemporary dance, circus and performances for children. Ticketing varies by event: some activities are free, while others offer reduced rates for members and audiences under 26.

Cinema and filmmaker encounters

The institute runs a regular cinema programme as part of the French Institute of Morocco’s exhibition network. It includes independent films, documentaries, Moroccan and Francophone work, family screenings and events attended by filmmakers or guests.

The April–June 2026 season combined auteur cinema, socially engaged documentaries and young-audience screenings. Events such as Fatna, a Woman Named Rachid used Leïla Alaoui Hall as both a cinema and a discussion space. Visitors should check language, subtitles, age guidance and ticketing for each screening.

A 500-square-metre media library

The media library is divided into adult and youth sections. Official figures published by the institute describe approximately 500 square metres, 30,000 printed documents, 2,200 multimedia items, 72 periodical titles and 130 seats.

Collections cover French and Francophone fiction, poetry, theatre, comics, albums, non-fiction, press, film and language-learning resources. The youth section includes a storytelling corner and a learner’s library. Tablets and PlayStation and Nintendo consoles support educational gaming and digital activities.

The programme also includes author events, reading clubs, workshops, school visits and monthly themes. Membership fees, loans, Culturethèque access and opening hours should be confirmed through the official website.

Micro-Folie, FabLab and virtual reality

Marrakech is one of the French Institute of Morocco sites equipped with a Micro-Folie. The facility combines a digital museum, a workshop and fabrication area and a virtual-reality space.

The digital museum offers high-definition access to collections from institutions including the Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Orsay and Grand Palais. Visits may be self-guided or led by a mediator. The FabLab supports projects linking art, science, design and digital fabrication, while the VR area presents immersive films and 360-degree performances.

Some activities are free but reserved for members or require advance booking. Tailored educational programmes are available for school groups.

French courses and certifications

The language centre serves children, teenagers, students, adults and professionals from beginner to advanced level. It provides group classes, conversation and pronunciation workshops, writing practice, professional French, company training, online formats and teacher development.

At the time of review, 30-hour sessions were advertised from MAD 950, workshops from MAD 50 and online courses from MAD 750. These are starting prices and should be checked when enrolling.

The institute also organises or prepares candidates for DELF, DALF, TCF, TEF and professional French qualifications. Cultural events, classes and examinations each follow separate calendars.

Campus France and academic cooperation

The campus houses one of Morocco’s four Campus France offices, alongside Casablanca, Fez and Rabat. It provides information about higher education in France and supports students through project planning, applications and interviews.

Academic cooperation also includes work with Cadi Ayyad University, research programmes, lectures and professional mobility. Campus France normally operates by appointment and is separate from cultural reception and language-course registration.

Maison Denise Masson as an associated venue

The Marrakech branch also manages Maison Denise Masson – Maison du Dialogue near Bab Doukkala. This historic house is separate from the Route de Targa campus and hosts research and artistic residencies, exhibitions and programmes focused on cultural and interfaith dialogue.

Visitors should therefore check the venue carefully: an event presented by the French Institute of Marrakech may take place either at the main campus or at Maison Denise Masson.

An active 2026 programme

The first half of 2026 included the Fête de la Musique, the interactive audiovisual performance KYF!, Marrakech fait son cirque, the La Cigogne volubile children’s literature festival, cinema screenings, literary meetings, exhibitions and digital workshops.

The institute regularly works with the Les Étoiles de Jamaa El Fna Cultural Centre, MACAAL, the Montresso* Art Foundation and other local cultural partners.
