Chefchaouen Cultural Centre – Dar Ettakafa

Chefchaouen’s House of Culture, not the Kasbah complex

The institution presented here is the Chefchaouen Cultural Centre, widely known as the House of Culture or Dar Ettakafa. It stands in the El Haouta area, close to Hammam El Harras, within the historic urban fabric of the medina.

This location must be distinguished from the Kasbah on Outa El Hammam square. The Kasbah contains a different group of cultural facilities, including the ethnographic museum, open-air theatre, Saïda Al Horra gallery and the Centre for Andalusian Studies and Research. The former Culturama profile incorrectly merged these institutions and placed the House of Culture inside the Kasbah.

Dar Ettakafa is a public cultural venue serving residents, schools, associations, artists and researchers. It is primarily a place for reading, lectures, artistic activity and community projects rather than a tourist monument with a permanent visitor route.

Architecture rooted in the medina

Descriptions of the building highlight Moroccan decorative craftsmanship: arches, zellige, painted wooden doors, worked ceilings, geometric flooring and a courtyard organised around a fountain. These elements give the centre the atmosphere of a traditional urban house rather than a standard modern multipurpose hall.

The architecture supports an intimate relationship between books, exhibitions and discussion. It should not, however, be confused with a museum display. Access depends on the cultural programme, library activity and administrative opening of the building.

Library and public reading

Reading is one of the best-documented functions of the centre. Its library supports author meetings, book presentations, reading workshops and activities developed with schools and local associations.

In January 2022, the centre and the Friends of Al-Mouatamid Association launched the Reading Club for All programme across Chefchaouen Province. The initiative included workshops, competitions, training and awards in schools, territorial libraries, social institutions and prisons, reaching both urban and rural communities.

This programme illustrates the centre’s wider provincial role. Dar Ettakafa does not simply store books; it helps create sustained reading practices and connects cultural resources with people living beyond the city centre.

The Abdelkrim Tabbal conference room

Since January 2022, the centre’s conference room has carried the name of Abdelkrim Tabbal, a leading figure in modern Moroccan poetry with deep ties to Chefchaouen.

The naming ceremony combined poetry readings, music and literary criticism. The room now provides a setting for lectures, round tables, book discussions, testimony, debate and small artistic forms. No reliable official technical sheet publishes its capacity, so Culturama does not assign an unverified seat count.

Poetry as a living urban tradition

Chefchaouen has a notable literary history. The National Festival of Modern Moroccan Poetry, organised with the Friends of Al-Mouatamid Association, is among Morocco’s longest-running poetry gatherings. Readings may take place in the Kasbah gardens, while critical sessions and literary discussions have regularly used the cultural centre.

This division of space is significant: historic outdoor venues provide a ceremonial setting, while Dar Ettakafa supports analysis, publishing, discussion and sustained exchange between poets, academics and readers.

Andalusian music and local memory

Andalusian heritage remains central to Chefchaouen’s cultural identity. It appears in architecture, music, social customs and the city’s relationship with the history of migration from Al-Andalus.

The centre has hosted gatherings devoted to Moroccan Andalusian music, including the Al-Walaâ meeting, which brought musicians and enthusiasts together around the al-âla repertoire and intergenerational transmission.

It may also host talks connected with Chefchaouen’s Andalusian forum. Major concerts, however, are generally staged at the Kasbah open-air theatre and other historic venues. The institution’s role as organiser or partner should therefore not be confused with the exact location of every performance.

Visual arts, photography and caricature

Dar Ettakafa has supported exhibitions and workshops in painting, photography, installation, video and contemporary practice. Programmes have involved Moroccan and Spanish artists and have included activities for children across several urban spaces.

The centre has also been one of the venues of Chefchaouen’s National Caricature and Media Forum. Exhibitions, lectures and debates on visual culture, journalism and freedom of expression brought together cartoonists, researchers, media professionals and younger audiences.

These activities matter in a city often reduced to a photogenic tourist image. They reveal Chefchaouen as a place where artists and critics actively produce, analyse and challenge images.

Theatre, workshops and civil society

The centre hosts or supports theatrical readings, training, rehearsals, project presentations and cultural meetings. Local associations also use it for activities linked to youth, education, heritage, Mediterranean culture and territorial development.

Its limited scale helps explain repeated local demands for a larger theatre and sociocultural complex. Construction of a separate sociocultural centre and theatre was launched in 2023. Dar Ettakafa should therefore be understood as the existing neighbourhood-scale cultural institution, not as the new large complex under development.

Cinema equipment, but no confirmed regular operation

Cinema equipment was installed at the centre in 2023 as part of Morocco’s programme to create screens inside public cultural centres. A parliamentary question later stated that the screen had still not opened despite the available equipment.

No subsequent official announcement confirming a regular cinema programme could be verified. The centre should not currently be described as an operating cinema. Occasional cultural screenings may take place, but they are not equivalent to a permanent commercial or municipal film theatre.

Part of a wider cultural network

Chefchaouen’s cultural life is distributed across Dar Ettakafa, the Kasbah and open-air theatre, Saïda Al Horra gallery, the ethnographic museum, Manahil Al Irfane municipal library, the music conservatory and the Centre for Andalusian Studies and Research.

The House of Culture has a specific place within this network: it offers a regular indoor setting for reading, speech, training, artistic experimentation and civil-society work. It connects local Jebli and Andalusian memory with contemporary production rather than presenting heritage as a static tourist image.

Planning a visit

The centre is located in El Haouta, near Hammam El Harras, within Chefchaouen’s medina. It does not offer a permanent museum circuit. The most meaningful visit is linked to a lecture, exhibition, workshop, literary meeting or library activity.

Some directories publish daytime administrative hours, but these should not be treated as guaranteed public-event times. Confirm the programme and access conditions with the organiser before travelling.
