A public cultural venue opened in 2015

Kénitra Cultural Centre was inaugurated on 12 January 2015 by Morocco’s then Minister of Culture, Mohammed Amine Sbihi, and Zineb El Adaoui, then wali of the Gharb-Chrarda-Béni Hssen region. The opening coincided with the seventh Arab Theatre Festival and celebrations marking a century of Moroccan theatre, placing live performance at the centre of the venue’s identity from the outset.

The building was financed by the Ministry of Culture at a reported cost of MAD 13.5 million. It was intended to strengthen the cultural infrastructure of Kénitra and the wider Gharb area while also housing administrative services connected to the territorial cultural authority.

A theatre of roughly 270 seats

The main facility is a modern theatre auditorium with approximately 270 seats. Contemporary reports vary slightly, giving capacities of either 264 or 270 seats. The hall is used for professional theatre, national tours, community productions, comedy, music, ceremonies and educational performances.

The centre also includes two rooms for talks and meetings, spaces or workshops for training, an exhibition area for visual art and photography, and administrative offices. This combination allows performance, discussion, learning and the public presentation of artistic work to take place within one institution.

Theatre, touring artists and live music

The centre is one of Kénitra’s principal public stages. It regularly hosts Moroccan theatre companies, comedy tours and locally organised festivals. The 2025 edition of Kénitra’s National Theatre Festival brought several productions to the venue alongside youth workshops in scenography, physical expression and stage delivery, attracting substantial local audiences.

Music also forms part of the programme. In January 2026, the Institut Français in Kénitra presented Bab L’Bluz at the centre during a national tour, demonstrating the venue’s ability to accommodate contemporary music and partnerships with major cultural institutions.

Exhibitions, photography and intercultural dialogue

Kénitra Cultural Centre is not limited to stage productions. Its exhibition space has hosted visual-art and photography projects. In 2022, it presented The Call of the Soul in the Time of Corona by photographer Hamza Mehimdate, a body of work exploring confinement and paying tribute to cultural figures who died during the pandemic.

In 2023, the opening of the Abeer Kénitra – Crossroads of Cultures festival took place at the centre, bringing Muslim, Jewish and Christian voices into a public conversation about coexistence and cultural exchange. Such programmes underline the venue’s function as a civic space for dialogue as well as an arts centre.

A resource for associations, young people and education

At the time of its inauguration, the Ministry of Culture described the centre as open to civil-society organisations, universities, education institutions, children and young people. Schools and local organisations continue to use it for performances, language festivals, conferences, student showcases and community events.

This role is particularly important in the Gharb region. The venue gives local artists and associations access to a technically equipped public stage without requiring audiences to travel to Rabat or Casablanca. Booking and access conditions may vary according to the event and organiser, so visitors should confirm arrangements in advance.

Do not confuse it with the larger unfinished complex

This guide covers the active cultural centre inaugurated in January 2015 on Rue Lamhanned Kacem, behind the CNSS offices. It should not be confused with the much larger theatre and cultural-complex project launched later in 2015 near Kénitra’s administrative square, a separate construction project that experienced long delays and technical difficulties.

This distinction matters when using maps or reading event listings. Performances advertised at “Centre Culturel Kénitra” or “المركب الثقافي بالقنيطرة” generally refer to the operational venue behind the CNSS.

Planning a visit

The centre is located in central Kénitra, within reasonable reach of the railway station. Public directories do not fully agree on standard opening hours, and evening performance times naturally fall outside administrative schedules. Always rely on the organiser’s confirmed date, time, ticketing and registration information.
