A regional conservatory for structured artistic education

The Oujda Regional Conservatory of Music and Choreographic Art is a public institution under Morocco’s Department of Culture and the Regional Directorate of Culture for the Oriental region. Founded in 2016, it belongs to the national network of conservatories providing structured education in music, singing, instrumental practice and choreographic art.

Training goes beyond learning a single instrument. Students work on musical literacy, listening, rhythm, interpretation, individual technique and ensemble practice. Registration and re-enrolment follow the annual calendar established for the ministry’s conservatory network.

Gharnati music, Arab repertoire and instrumental practice

In Oujda, the conservatory has a particular role in transmitting Gharnati music, a major component of the city’s musical identity and of the wider Oriental region. Its orchestra has performed Gharnati and classical Arab repertoire at cultural events, including concerts at the Mohammed VI Theatre.

Activities documented around the conservatory include piano, guitar, saxophone, percussion, choral singing, vocal technique and ensemble work. The precise range of classes may change depending on the academic year and available teaching staff.

Classical dance and choreographic art

The institution also provides education in classical dance and choreographic art. This part of the programme develops physical discipline, musicality, coordination, stage presence and collective performance.

Students from different age groups can take part in presentations organised at key moments of the school year. These performances create a gradual bridge between classroom learning and public presentation.

A performance venue and cultural partner

The conservatory includes a performance hall used for concerts, theatre, school programmes and collaborative cultural projects. The French Institute of Oujda regularly programmes events there with the Regional Directorate of Culture, including music, theatre, film and young-audience performances.

This public role makes the institution more than an arts school. It supports artist circulation, encounters between students and professionals, and access to contemporary and international work for audiences in Oujda.

International cooperation and cross-disciplinary learning

The conservatory has developed exchanges with European institutions including the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and the Hoboken Academy of Music. These partnerships have supported workshops in instrumental practice, choral singing, vocal technique and ensemble performance.

It has also opened its educational programme to visual arts. Workshops for younger students have explored how musical listening can be translated into shapes, colours and images, encouraging broader artistic sensitivity rather than separating disciplines.
