About the event
Abel and Balkis believe their love can free them from the wounds of the past. When an earthquake strikes Morocco, Balkis leaves for the land of her ancestors. After a long separation, she finally speaks to Abel in Moroccan Darija, a language he does not understand. To reconnect, he must discover memories, family histories and words that had never been part of his own experience. Iqtibās explores cross-cultural love, inheritance and the silences that separate generations.
Cultural context
Written and directed by Sarah M. for the Beïna theatre company, the production mixes contemporary theatre, dance, spoken-word poetry and live music. Hayet Darwich and Maxime Lévêque perform the principal roles, joined by musician Osam. Translation, body language and the interplay between French and Darija become central dramatic elements. The Moroccan tour forms part of the Institut français's J-Lioum cultural season.
