Modern art in dialogue with Amazigh heritage

Agadir Museum of Art, often referred to as AMA, is a major addition to the city’s cultural landscape. Opened in 2023 through cooperation between local and regional authorities and Morocco’s National Foundation of Museums, it brings together modern and contemporary art with collections connected to Amazigh and Moroccan material heritage.

The museum is built around a significant donation from collector and patron El Khalil Belguench. Rather than separating fine art from decorative and vernacular practices, its permanent display places paintings alongside jewellery, carpets, ceramics and other objects. This approach encourages visitors to trace relationships between motif, colour, landscape, memory and the body across different forms of making.

Collections and curatorial approach

The galleries present Moroccan and international artists through thematic and art-historical perspectives. Figurative work, landscape, abstraction and contemporary experimentation can be read alongside textile and metalwork traditions. The curatorial framework is particularly relevant in Agadir, a city whose modern history, reconstruction and Amazigh cultural environment have shaped its visual identity.

The museum therefore contributes to a broader understanding of Moroccan modernity. It shows how artists have negotiated local histories, international movements and inherited forms without treating “tradition” and “contemporary art” as opposing categories.

Why it matters in Agadir

AMA strengthens the museum offer of the Souss-Massa region and provides a permanent institution for exhibitions, education and cultural mediation. It can be visited as part of a wider itinerary linking visual culture, performance and scientific heritage.
