A language institute built around intercultural exchange
Founded in 1982, ALIF – Arabic Language Institute in Fez teaches Modern Standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic to students, researchers and professionals from many countries. Its main centre occupies an Art Deco villa in the modern city, with classrooms, a garden and working spaces on a more intimate scale than a university campus.
ALIF is connected to the American Language Center of Fez through the American Cultural Association. This relationship encourages exchange among Arabic-, English- and French-speaking learners and supports programmes that connect language study with an informed understanding of Moroccan society.
A specialist library and academic resources
The library is one of the institute’s principal assets. Its collections cover Arabic linguistics, Maghreb history, social sciences, Islamic art and architecture, literature and Islamic studies. It serves enrolled students, teachers and some researchers according to the institute’s access arrangements.
Learning may include intensive or semester courses, tutoring, conversation practice and contextual activities. Visits, lectures and field projects help students connect vocabulary with urban history, institutions and everyday social practice.
A complementary cultural programme
ALIF periodically hosts talks, concerts, exhibitions, workshops and public encounters. These programmes bring together Moroccan and international artists, scholars, students and residents. The institute also uses ALIF Riad in the medina for selected cultural activities, exhibitions and educational experiences.
Its role complements the Instituto Cervantes and the French Institute of Fez. ALIF places Arabic and Moroccan realities at the centre of the experience while participating in an international circulation of knowledge.
Planning a visit or application
The main centre is generally open on weekdays, but access to classes, the library and events depends on the programme. Contact the institute in advance for academic enquiries or group visits.
