A cultural and educational riad in the medina

ALIF Riad is a traditional house in the Batha area used by the Arabic Language Institute in Fez. It complements the institute’s main centre in the modern city by providing a setting embedded in the architecture and everyday life of the medina.

The riad allows students to move Arabic learning beyond the classroom. The organisation of the house, the relationship between courtyard and rooms, materials, hospitality and neighbourhood life become resources for understanding social practice and lived heritage.

Exhibitions, encounters and practical activities

ALIF states that the riad hosts cultural events and art exhibitions throughout the year. Depending on the programme, it may be used for intimate concerts, talks, artistic presentations, workshops or activities involving students and external guests.

The house is also used for a cooking club and contextual learning. Preparing a dish, learning vocabulary for ingredients and techniques, and sharing the meal give language study a practical dimension. The riad additionally provides study space for participants in ALIF programmes.

A complementary venue rather than a permanent museum

ALIF Riad does not operate as a monument with daily visitor access. Entry depends on courses, organised activities and announced events. External visitors should confirm that a programme is public or contact ALIF before arriving.
