About Bab Marrakech Bastion

Things to do in Essaouira →

A fortification transformed into a cultural space

The Bab Marrakech Bastion is one of the major defensive structures of Essaouira’s medina. Built in the nineteenth century, it protected the landward entrance to the city and formed part of the wider system of walls surrounding former Mogador.

Its circular plan, thick walls and military openings help visitors understand the city’s defensive organisation. The monument is part of the UNESCO-listed medina.

Gallery and open-air stage

The bastion is more than a monument. Interior spaces are used for exhibitions, while the rooftop can accommodate performances and cultural events. This reuse connects heritage conservation with contemporary artistic activity.

Programming depends on current projects and seasons. A visit may therefore focus on architecture, an exhibition or a scheduled event.
