A museum for understanding Essaouira

The Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Museum occupies a historic residence in the medina. Its collections trace the development of Essaouira and its surrounding region through archaeological objects, coins, jewellery, clothing, weapons, carpets, musical instruments and examples of local woodwork.

The displays help visitors understand the exchanges that shaped former Mogador, including Atlantic trade, relations with the hinterland, Amazigh traditions, urban life and the presence of several communities.

Collections, music and craftsmanship

A significant part of the museum is devoted to intangible heritage. Instruments, clothing, jewellery and everyday objects provide context for music, celebrations, crafts and local forms of expression.

In April 2026, Morocco’s Ministry of Culture, the National Foundation of Museums, Essaouira municipality and the Essaouira-Mogador Association signed an agreement to rehabilitate and develop the museum. The project is intended to strengthen its role within the city’s heritage network.

The museum is located at 161 Avenue Mohamed Zafzaf. Published opening times may change during renovation work, public holidays or seasonal periods, so confirm access before travelling.
