A cinema shaped by Agadir’s reconstruction

Cinema Sahara holds a distinctive place in Agadir’s urban memory. Located in New Talborjt, it belongs to the generation of public and commercial buildings created after the devastating earthquake of 29 February 1960, when the city was rebuilt through a new modernist urban plan. The exact opening year has not been published in the institutional sources reviewed for this guide, but the building is generally associated with the 1960s and the reconstruction period.

Its white surfaces, exposed structural language, geometric ventilation screens and compact composition reflect that architectural era. The later restoration deliberately sought to recover the building’s original expression while giving the auditorium a theatrical atmosphere with references to Art Deco.

Saved from demolition

Like many single-screen cinemas in Morocco, Sahara experienced a long period of economic vulnerability. The building was at one point threatened by a property-development project. Residents, cultural associations, film professionals and heritage advocates mobilised to defend it as part of Agadir’s collective memory.

In October 2019, Agadir’s municipal council approved the acquisition of the cinema. The decision protected the site from demolition and brought it into the city’s 2020–2024 Urban Development Programme, which included the rehabilitation of several historic buildings as active cultural infrastructure.

A comprehensive architectural and technical restoration

Work began in March 2021 under the project management of the Agadir Souss-Massa Aménagement local development company. The announced investment was approximately 12 million Moroccan dirhams.

The project included structural consolidation, new floor, wall and ceiling finishes, projection and stage equipment, improved lighting and acoustics, and greater audience comfort. The design also created a more visible entrance, a light-filtering façade, signage inspired by the cinema’s historic lettering and extensive use of wood inside.

The auditorium was reorganised as a unified hall capable of hosting screenings, discussions and cultural events. The annex was redesigned with an upper-floor café and a stronger urban frontage facing Tamri Square. The restored cinema reopened at the end of May 2022.

An intimate single-screen venue

Sahara remains a single-screen cinema. An international specialist database currently lists approximately 140 seats. As this figure is not confirmed in a recently published municipal technical sheet, it should be treated as an informed indication rather than a contractual capacity.

The relatively small scale distinguishes Sahara from multiplexes. It is particularly suited to screenings followed by debates, filmmaker encounters, previews and curated programmes in which conversation becomes part of the cinema experience.

Agadir’s documentary-film landmark

Cinema Sahara is the emblematic home of the Agadir International Documentary Film Festival — FIDADOC. The 2025 and 2026 editions brought together Moroccan, African and international documentaries, competitions, tributes, premieres, professional meetings and workshops.

The seventeenth edition, held in June 2026, presented twenty-eight works from sixteen countries. Beyond screenings, FIDADOC develops the Documentary Hive, masterclasses and project-support programmes for emerging filmmakers from Africa and its diasporas.

Through the festival, Sahara becomes a space for documentary culture, public memory and critical debate. Films address social change, migration, colonial legacies, human rights, environmental issues and contemporary African narratives.

Amazigh cinema and multiple perspectives

The cinema also hosts the Issni N’Ourgh International Amazigh Film Festival — FINIFA, whose seventeenth edition is scheduled at Sahara in October 2026. This reinforces the venue’s role in presenting Amazigh languages, histories and creative perspectives from southern Morocco and beyond.

The presence of both FIDADOC and FINIFA places Cinema Sahara at the meeting point of Moroccan cinema, African filmmaking, international documentary and Amazigh cultural expression.

Programming beyond festivals

Outside major festivals, the venue hosts selected screenings, film-club sessions, discussions and artistic events. The Institut français d’Agadir uses the cinema for its Plan large programme, presenting Moroccan and international films, sometimes with filmmakers and invited speakers.

Sahara can also accommodate concerts, performances and collective broadcasts. This flexibility reflects the purpose of the restoration: maintaining cinema as the core activity while creating a neighbourhood cultural venue for Talborjt and the wider city.

A landmark in Agadir’s cultural landscape

The cinema complements venues including the Agadir Open-Air Theatre, the Jamal Dorra Cultural Complex, Les Étoiles du Souss and the Agadir Museum of Art.

Its significance extends beyond the films shown. Sahara demonstrates how a historic neighbourhood cinema can operate simultaneously as architectural heritage, active public infrastructure and a tool for local cultural development, linking the memory of Agadir’s reconstruction with contemporary film culture.
