About Ben Youssef Madrasa Marrakech

Things to do in Marrakech →
## A historic centre of learning The Ben Youssef Madrasa stands in the medina of Marrakesh near the mosque of the same name. Its present architectural form is primarily associated with reconstruction undertaken by the Saadian Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib in 1564–1565. The school once combined accommodation with instruction in religious disciplines and other subjects, reflecting the role of madrasas as institutions of knowledge and student life in Maghrebi cities. ## The main courtyard and student quarters Its layout centres on a rectangular courtyard and reflecting pool, framed by carefully balanced façades. Student rooms arranged around smaller courts and galleries have a different scale and decorative treatment from the formal communal spaces. Carved cedar wood, coloured zellige, sculpted plaster and Arabic calligraphy are central to the visual programme. The spatial organisation reveals how learning, residence and shared religious and social functions were integrated within a single building. ## Decoration and restoration Inscriptions, geometry and plant-inspired motifs appear across the building's walls and architectural details. The tilework and ornamental plaster preserve evidence of specialised craftsmanship during the Saadian period. The madrasa underwent later changes and periods of reduced use. Conservation campaigns supported by Moroccan authorities, including the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, have sought to preserve its materials and provide access as a historic monument. ## Visiting the madrasa Address: Rue Assouel, Marrakesh medina. The institution's official website lists opening every day from 9 am to 7 pm. Online ticket sales may be temporarily unavailable, with tickets purchased at the entrance instead.
